The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics of the German Aerospace Center is the scientific pathfinder of the energy storage industry of the future. With a staff of approximately 200 people the institute uses a unique combination of numerical simulation and laboratory experiment to establish the scientific foundations of electrochemical and thermal energy storage technologies. Moreover, the institute collaborates with industrial partners to develop innovative energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cell systems for aircraft and automotive application or high-temperature thermal energy storage for solar power plants and industrial processes. The institute uses knowledge-based multiscale numerical tools to carry out large-scale simulations of complex energy storage systems, thereby contributing to the development of virtual energy systems design. The energy systems analysis group of the institute offers strategic advice in energy policy to governments, firms and non-governmental organizations.
