Maxwell Ultracapacitors in the Grid
Ultracapacitors (supercapacitors) deliver energy storage capability to utility grids and microgrids. Delivered power range is 1MW to 24MW. Systems configuration includes stand alone or tandem with lithium-ion or other advanced battery chemistries. When deployed as a stand-alone supercapacitor system on the grid, these systems provide high power density in the form of reactive power and deliver high load currents with rapid discharge – recharge profiles for the most demanding T&D grid operating conditions. When deployed as a tandem system to grid energy storage battery systems, supercapacitors meet the high c-rate demands of the grid, relieving stress from and extending the life of lithium-ion and other batteries. Supercapacitor grid energy storage systems are compact, have cycle lifetimes from 800,000 to over 1,000,000 discharge-recharge cycles, and operate in environments from -40°C to +70°. Deployments and applications include utility scale solar and wind firming, synthetic system inertia for transmission, utility scale power system bridging, fast frequency response, distribution level power quality remediation and advanced stacked services when combined with traditional battery energy systems.
